5 Villages to Visit in the Cotswolds

The next time you're going to England think about what the countryside has to offer. We love the Costwolds - a picturesque region in southwestern England renowned for its charming villages, rolling hills, and timeless beauty. Authentic accommodations to the area like the historic The Old Bell Inn or the cozy, intimate The Pig make us feel like we are in a Nancy Meyers movie (which is the ultimate goal when we're the ones traveling). While there are many fantastic villages in the Cotswolds today we've chosen to highlight five that are sure to be worth the visit!

Bibury

Often described as the most beautiful village in England, Bibury is a true gem. This is great for slow travelers. Those who are looking for a quaint, romantic afternoon, and those who like a taste of history. Bibury's most famous feature, Arlington Row, is a row of quaint, 17th-century cottages that appear to have stepped straight out of a storybook. These honey-colored stone houses that sit along the serene River Coln, once used to house wool merchants' workers, are now a photographer’s paradise and this area is great for a relaxing afternoon stroll. If you're looking for a fun and local activity, the Bibury Trout Farm is worth the stop - trust us on this! This working trout farm offers a unique opportunity to catch your own fish to BBQ on site, enjoy a sit down lunch at their cafe of locally sourced food, or simply enjoy the tranquil surroundings walking the willows surrounding the ponds that line the River Coln. For history buffs, stop by the picturesque St. Mary's Church that has rich history and beautiful stained glass windows.

Castle Combe

Castle Combe feels like a fairy-tale destination with its medieval buildings, charming streets, and idyllic setting. It's no wonder this village is a popular spot for tourists and filmmakers alike. A stroll through the picturesque streets that are lined with charming 14th and 15th-century cottages is always worth the time. Eventually you will stumble upon Market Cross, a historic focal point of the village, that has many historic landmarks to spot like St. Andrew's Church, the faceless clock, and medieval monuments. For lunch, stop by one of the local, historic pubs like The Castle Inn Pub. If you love a round of golf or want a traditional afternoon tea, we'll help you book to properly soak in the countryside culture. For film and TV buffs, Castle Combe is a great place to hunt for the film locations of the 1967 Doctor Dolittle, Stardust, and series Downtown Abbey to name a few!

Bourton-on-the-Water

Bourton-on-the-Water is often called the “Venice of the Cotswolds” due to its charming bridges spanning the River Windrush. With its bustling High street, lovely shops, and scenic beauty, it’s a great spot for a relaxing day out. There are many niche interest attractions here, like the Cotswold Motoring Museum - perfect for car enthusiasts to view the vast collection of classic cars and motoring memorabilia. For nature and active travelers, visit the protected Greystone Farm, ancient meadows and rivers home to a diverse range of wildlife and also the site of the Salmonsbury Camp, a historic monument of the Neolithic and Iron Ages. Love to drink local? Tour and sip beer and cider at Hawkstone Brewery. We love Bourton-on-the-Water for all it's English quirkiness amongst the scenic countryside that the Cotswolds are known.

Upper and Lower Slaughter

Just north of Bourton-on-the-Water are the twin villages of Slaughter (look, we didn't name them). Not a single building has been built since 1906, making these completely historic villages. Upper Slaughter is great for a traveler looking to take scenic walks. Or an alternative and exciting way to explore the idyllic stone cottages and River Eye is via horseback with the gentle and quite locally famous horses of Bourton Vale Equestrian Center. In Lower Slaughter, walk the famously romantic Copse Hill Road. Taking in the quaint beauty of the village, you can visit the Old Mill for the museum and homemade ice cream and stop by the Victorian Village hall for art exhibits. If you love Jane Austen, the 2020 movie Emma was filmed here!

Broadway

Known as the “Jewel of the Cotswolds,” Broadway boasts impressive streets lined with historic buildings, art galleries, and charming boutiques. Its architecture and vibrant cultural scene make it a must-visit destination. Start your day by climbing the iconic Broadway Tower for stunning panoramic views of the Cotswolds. Explore Broadway's High Street which is lined with beautiful honey-colored buildings, that are home to local shops, cafes, and eateries. Broadway is known for its dedication to the arts, often hosting art galleries and festivals and home to many art museums. One to visit is the Gordon Russell Design Museum which is dedicated to the work of designer Gordon Russell and the history of British design. Explore the grounds of the Snowshill Manor, a historic home turned into a gardens and orchards, personal collection, cafe, and secondhand bookshop.
