I admit that my need to visit an independent bookstore everywhere I go might not be everyone's cup of tea, and conversely underground spelunking type tours where you have to crawl in small dark spaces are a hard no for me. So - because variety is the spice of....(you know the rest)...I always have plenty of excursion and tour options to recommend. If you are looking for adventure or sightseeing- start with some of our favorites- one each for Mykonos, Santorini, and Corfu.
Mykonos
Private Cruise to Delos & Rhenia Islands
As a friend from Greece recently said to me, "We Greeks love our water!" If you're interested in history and Greek mythology, then the deserted Delos island is a terrific choice. Your cruise begins at Platis Gialos Port and continues to Delos island, where you'll get a panoramic view of its monuments and archaeological remains. You can choose to stop at its port and visit the archaeological museum or just continue to Rhenia Island - where you'll stop for swimming and snorkeling at one of the isle's quiet and serene beaches. Most people don't consider snorkeling when visiting Greece, but it's a nice change of pace and change of wildlife compared to snorkeling you may have done in the Caribbean. After that you'll head to one of the more famous and populous beaches in Mykonos - for more swimming or lying on the sand. Finally you'll sail back to the port of Platis Gialos.
Santorini
Private Sunset Cruise
The epic colors of Santorini's beaches are unusual and unexpected - and this tour makes it easy to see some of the most stunning - without feeling overwhelmed or being too rushed to enjoy your surroundings.
You'll see Red Beach, one of the most interesting - due to its reddish earth tones. Volcanic eruptions led to its formation, and it's surrounded by massive volcanic rock - the sand a mixture of red, with black rocks dotting the beach. This beach is also known for its marine life - which makes it a perfect stop for snorkeling.
Next will be White Beach - formed under enormous white cliffs. The beach itself is composed of grey volcanic sand and black pebbles - the contrast is breathtaking. The coast here is shallow, and the waters are truly crystal clear.
Both of these are small and only semi-organized with a few umbrellas and lounge chairs - no real amenities - one of the reasons that visiting on a tour like this is such a great way to experience them. You'll see everything, but you'll have snacks, drinks, and guides who will give you all of the information you're looking for. Yachts and boats in Greece cannot moor directly on the beach, and another perk is that these tours stop at the best points for swimming and snorkeling - while mooring as close as possible to the beaches.
You'll also stop at Thirasia island where you can take gorgeous photos, you'll sail by Aspronisi, Ancient Lighthouse, Akrotiri, and Indian Rock, and it's all timed to end with a visit to the village of Oia where you'll witness a truly incomparable sunset.
Corfu
Cruise of the Blue Caves, Antipaxos, and Paxos
While you're staying in Corfu take a day trip to the neighboring islands of Antipaxos and Paxos. You'll start by sailing to the Blue Caves - popular rock formations - some that are big enough that cruise ships can fit through. Legend has it that one of these caves was where the ancient palace of Poseidon and Amphitriti (The God of the Sea and his wife) was located. Next stop - Antipaxos, where you can swim in gorgeous crystal clear blue water coves. The last stop is the smallest of the Ionian islands - Paxos. According to legend Paxos was created by Poseidon when he struck off the southern tip of Corfu with his trident to create a retreat for his wife, Amphitriti. You'll explore charming narrow streets and alleyways, pop in and out of small shops, and enjoy the atmosphere before finishing your tour with an authentic Greek lunch in one of the local tavernas.
Note: While Greece is an awesome year-round destination - the sea is not warm all year round. You're going to find the best temperatures for snorkeling during the high season - between June and October, with August typically the most ideal month due to a great combination of high temperatures, low wind, and beautiful light.
