If you are in-the-know about European travel you’ve probably heard buzz about the ETIAS coming soon. You may already have all of the knowledge - or you may have heard bits and pieces. Either way - keep reading because this will be vital for future international trips.
What is ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is an automated IT system designed to identify potential security threats. Essentially, it is a safety measure for travel implemented across the Schengen area.
When will I need to have ETIAS ?
If you recently traveled to Europe, you may be a little confused because this has not been a requirement. However, starting in 2024 this will be mandatory for US citizens traveling internationally. The good news is that once you apply, your travel authorization is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires - whichever comes first.
How is ETIAS different from a passport?
The ETIAS is specific to travel to or within the Schengen area, and the purpose is to streamline the customs process in and out of those countries.
Once I have my ETIAS do I still need my passport?
Yes! You’ll still need your valid passport to travel in Europe. The ETIAS is in addition to your passport.
How far in advance do I need to apply for the ETIAS authorization?
Thanks to technology, it is predicted that the ETIAS authorization takes as quick as a few minutes up to 30 days, which is a breeze compared to issuing or renewing passports!
What do I need for the ETIAS application?

Personal information including your name(s), date and place of birth, sex, nationalities, home address, email address and phone number(s);
