Four Things to Do in Iceland When You're Short on Time

Updated: Nov 16, 2022

Iceland is full of epic vistas - views of volcanic rock and ice, and stunning waterfalls that are sure to be on your list. But between the lava cave explorations, glacier walks, and whale watches - you may need some relative down time. So what about the smaller activities to add on? In Iceland, those little additions enhance your experience in a big way. Here are four of my favorites.

Geothermal Bakery Tour

This is a great way to experience Iceland's geothermal energy first hand and witness how a traditional Icelandic geothermal baked bread is made. (I also have clients who loved the bread so much they called to see if they could get it shipped from Iceland to the US). A walk to the geothermal bakery starts from the reception at Laugarvatn Fontana, a lakefront spa featuring natural steam baths and outdoor mineral pools. You can watch as the host digs out a pot of fresh bread from the hot black sand, and then you're able to taste the bread, served hot from the ground with Icelandic butter. It's a short tour, but it's a one of a kind experience that you can't have in the US!

Visit and Lunch at Fridheimar Tomato Farm

This is a can't miss for the horticulturist! This is an environmentally-friendly family owned tomato farm where they grow tomatoes year round, breed horses, and serve delicious tomato soup in their greenhouse restaurant. With a lunch stop here you learn about the processes of greenhouse horticulture, and how Icelanders grow vegetables by creating Mediterranean conditions throughout the long dark winter, AND learn about geothermal heating. It's a great stop for a delicious lunch (of course tomato based) while eating in the actual greenhouse with the tomatoes growing around you. You can purchase Tomato Jam, Cucumber Salsa, and Tomato Drink to take away as a souvenir. One thing to note is that lunch is a set menu - tomato soup with homemade bread and hot beverages. Drinks, desserts, and other menu options are also available for an additional cost.

Icelandic Lava Show

The Icelandic Lava Show is the only place in the world where you can safely experience hot molten lava close up. The show recreates a volcano eruption (similar to what Eyjafjallajökull and Katla volcanos are famous for) by pouring molten lava (1100°C / 2000°F) into the showroom and over ice. You'll see a battle between the elements and actually be able to see the red hot lava flowing, hear it sizzling, and feel the intense heat that radiates out from it. The hosts do a fantastic job of teaching a huge amount of information while keeping the show exciting and interesting. (Side note - it's in the same building as the Soup Kitchen - a perfect stop for lunch or dinner).

FlyOver Iceland 4D Cinema Experience

This 45 minute experience in Reykjavik has you feeling like you're soaring above Iceland. It's a fantastic introduction to the Icelandic people and Icelandic culture. Prior to the flight guides and resident troll Sú Vitra will lead you through two adventures featuring the magic of Iceland, and exploring the roll of nature, time, and humans on the island. Then, you'll sit suspended in front of a spherical screen while special effects - including wind, mist, and scents create an exhilarating journey across the country. You'll learn about and experience Vikings, trolls, volcanoes, and glaciers. It's a terrific add-on to a day in Reykjavik!
