Switzerland

Switzerland is the ultimate iconic, picturesque winter escape - with plenty of variety. We recommend Switzerland for families, couples, and solo travelers. Particularly those who appreciate the beauty of a snow covered landscape - and don't mind the cold. Switzerland is fantastic for scenic travel, active families, and adventure seekers (not to mention the fondue and chocolate!). For spectacular scenery (but slower travel) the Switzerland Grand Train Tour offers views of winterscapes that are reminiscent of Narnia. For the adventurous travelers - Interlaken (nicknamed the adventure capital of Europe) offers skiing and snowboarding along with winter kayaking and paragliding down mountains. Lucerne is great for an active family - plenty of winter sports, and a downtown with delicious dining, locally owned shops, and activities like boat tours of Lake Lucerne. Looking to wind down? Basel is known for its winter markets around the holidays, and Zermatt is a fantastic car-free village to explore. If you want the full spa and luxury treatment travel to Gstaad, famous (literally a celeb favorite) for its resorts in the mountains.

Portugal

If you want all that Europe has to offer but really would like winter weather to end, then Portugal is perfect for you. The "pearl of the Atlantic" is nicknamed for its gorgeous views, balmy weather year round (winters are a mild mid 60s -70s, with the most sunny days per year in Europe), and vibrant culture. For those looking for history and culture go to Lisbon and Porto for ancient castles and historical neighborhoods filled with bright colors of Azorean tiles. From Lisbon, day trips can include Sintra for medieval castles and mansions and Cascais for a sea-side escape with a lively downtown. Portugal is also a food lover's paradise with its fresh seafood, pastel de nata, and famous Port Wines. For those looking to sightsee, when you're at Madeira's famously lush vineyards or Algarve's coastline, you must take a teleferico- or cable car - to view the gorgeous views from above. Planning to make it for the holidays in Portugal? The Christmas Markets in Lisbon are a must for warm holiday cheer!

New Zealand

If you'd like adventure in the winter but you also want to get out of the snow - consider New Zealand where it is summer from December through February. In this stunning landscape you can hike, explore volcanos in the national parks, zipline in Queenstown, and kayak the Bay of Islands. The lush nature of New Zealand is incredible from land to sea- it's no wonder Lord of. the Ring's "Middle Earth" was brought to life using locations in New Zealand from the North to South Islands. For a sight that is truly a treasure to behold - explore the limestone caves of Waitomo filled with glow worms lighting the caves making it appear to be a starry night. If you are looking to take in history and culture, the indigenous Maori culture is engrained throughout the country. A day trip to Rotorua offers a peak into Maori tradition and customs from food to daily practices and tours of ancient villages. For those looking a more relaxing trip, both the North and South Island are known for geothermal pools, spas and resorts overlooking lush forests and mountains, and pristine beaches lining every shore. There really is something for every type of traveler in New Zealand!

Belize

For a classic winter escape to perfect white sand beaches, endless warm weather, and views of the sunset over the ocean - look no further than Belize. With over 200 miles of coastline, there is plenty of beach for everyone. An iconic beach is the Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye, an island off the coast. Here you'll find music, food, and drinks flowing all while looking out to pristine views. Be wined and dined while you enjoy the luxury of the ocean views at the the gourmet Love on the Rocks, an ocean front dining experience where everything you eat is cooked on lava rocks. What could be more of the full Belize experience than that? If you are looking for more than just beach, there are plenty of Mayan ruins and architectural sites that dive deep into the ancient culture of the Mayan people. Or try some diving and snorkeling with some of the world's best diving experiences in Belize's Barrier Reef, especially in the famous Great Blue Hole. Belize is great for couples or the solo traveler to take a beat from the cold weather, get away from hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and soak up endless ocean views.

Best for: couples travel, solo travel, relaxation, history and culture

Danube River Cruise

For something a little different - try an all inclusive, luxury cruise down the Danube River following the paths of European cultural landmarks. From the Roman Empire to Greek legends, the river and the stops of Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Austria, and Germany all hold a rich history. Where geography meets history, you will immerse yourself in the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo, built into the side of a mountain, the taste of wine in Ilok- a center of wine production since Roman times, or the grandeur of Vienna, as you visit the opulent Schönbrunn Palace listening to Mozart and Strauss in their origin. The best part? During the winter, some of the best Christmas Markets in the world are happening. Light up your nights walking through these markets filled with holiday cheer, locally made goodies, and the magic of the season. If you are new to the idea of a river cruise, you can read more here to see if it might be a right fit for you!
