Sure - February 14th comes and goes each year, but we know that traveling with your partner is something you can do throughout the year. The activities you love to do together can help determine your destination. Our pro tip - have the destination fit you and not the other way around. Think about what brings you the most joy as a couple, and we will plan from there! We've come up with some of our favorite romantic destinations with you in mind.
Bora Bora
If you imagine your romantic getaway with the privacy of a remote island, overwater bungalows in paradise, and the ocean out your back door - then Bora Bora is perfect for you. The islets, or motus, that make up Bora Bora offer gorgeous views and allow you to be off of the mainland. Motus make up most of Bora Bora which makes the water almost a part of the island itself. This means it's easiest to get around on water - by boat, kayak, or canoe - and that water activities and excursions are easily accessible.
The shallow waters around the motus are crystal clear and hardly disturbed by wildlife until you get to deeper waters. Take a boat tour with dinner and champagne at sunset for a tropical dining experience. Order a canoe breakfast privately “shipped” to the side of your bungalow for you to enjoy together looking out at the endless sea. Active couples will find there is still plenty of land to explore if you are not on the water - with a variety of hikes around the island center you'll be able to find one that fits your level of fitness. If you're more adventurous, take an excursion to deeper waters to snorkel the reef or try scuba diving!
Provence
If you're a couple who imagines the perfect romantic getaway as a trip that combines culture, history, and gorgeous scenery, then Provence may be for you. This region in the south of France situated between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, is known for the lavender fields that bloom in early summer. Touring and harvesting lavender at these picturesque landscapes of purple set to historical sites or farms in the background is one reason couples flock to this area. Provence is between mountain and sea so you'll be able to explore a nice variety of landscape as well.
If you love the ocean views, check out Marsielle! Many people flock to the coastal city of Nice, but Marsielle has extensive sightseeing options - walkable views of the ocean along the Corniche Kennedy, exploration of nature at the Frioul Archipelago or Calanques National Park, and delicious restaurant and bars with ocean views. And speaking of sightseeing - we recommend a stop in France's most beautiful village, Moustiers Sainte-Marie, located at the Vergon Gorges, the deepest canyon in France. The drive or hikes along this area offer incredible views of forest atop canyons that overlook pristine turquoise waters, and if you're wine connoisseur - this is the perfect area to stop for a tasting!
Santorini
Another option? Quintessential views of Santorini high on the caldera overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The landscape offers stunning ocean views and adventure possibilities like exploring volcanic sites. It is important to note that if you are looking for those iconic views close to the edge of the caldera this will takes a bit of physical activity from the traveler. Because of the high cliffs for some accommodations you will take a cable car up until you arrive to your destination. However, often times, the streets closest to the edge are not made for cars, so be prepared to walk with your bags.
Once on the island, experience Greek culture through food and wine. If you're foodies, you'll love sitting out on a patio, snacking on local veggies with fresh tzatziki or the local favorite - tomato fritters called tomatokeftedes. Book a winery tour, many of which have famous views of the caldera. Take the day to relax with endless ocean views, or pop around to the different towns on the island - each with their own distinct personality. A Santorini perk is that as the sun sets you can walk the narrow roads filled with local shops, live music playing from restaurants, and people enjoying the perfect weather. The ambience of this small Greek island really is romantic in every way.
