If you're looking to bring the magic of the holiday season to life during your winter travel, Strasbourg needs to be on your "must visit" list. This city, which has been called the "Christmas Capital," is also home to one of the most famously historic Christmas markets in the world. Here you'll experience cozy markets lit up for the season, local foods, handcrafted gifts, and plenty of activities for the whole family.
Christmas Markets in Strasbourg
Strasbourg's Christmas markets are some of the oldest in Europe, with origins dating back to 1570. The city’s rich history as a crossroads of French and German cultures has shaped its holiday celebrations with centuries-old customs, crafts, and festive treats that make for a timeless experience.
At the center of Strasbourg's Christmas market experience is the Christkindelsmärik, the city’s main market located in front of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Strasbourg Cathedral. Here, you’ll find over 300 wooden stalls packed with handcrafted gifts, ornaments, and delicious holiday treats. Sample the region’s delicious seasonal foods from bredele (traditional Alsatian Christmas cookies) to flammekueche (thin-crust pizza topped with crème fraîche, onions, and bacon) to satisfy your palate. If you're looking to shop for local goods, you can find everything from intricate wooden toys and hand-painted ornaments to luxurious scarves, gloves, and candles.
Exploring Strasbourg During the Holidays
There are so many areas of the city beside the Christkindelsmärik that are full of holiday spirit and are worth exploring. First, don’t miss the towering Christmas tree also known as the Grand Sapin, which stands in Place Kléber, and is adorned with thousands of sparkling lights and decorations. The tree itself is an attraction that never fails to impress visitors, but the surrounding villages are a treat to explore in the cold months. Even locals flock to this area to enjoy The Star Soup, where world-renowned chefs prepare some of the best soups you'll ever have.
Next, visit the Square Louise Weiss for the Alsace vendors. Alsace is the region of France Strasbourg is in and they are known for their crafts, such as pottery, glassware, and hand-carved figurines. For one of the best views of the city this time of year head to the covered bridges and Vaubaun Dam to overlook the lit up city and cathedral at dusk.
Last, we recommend a visit to Le Petit France, a historic district in Strasbourg located on the Grande Île, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. When you stroll through during the holiday season, it’s like stepping into a storybook. The neighborhood’s narrow, winding streets are lined with beautiful medieval buildings that look as if they’ve been dusted with snow just for the occasion. Gables with colorful shutters are adorned with festive decorations that create an atmosphere of warmth and cheer. The canals that run through Le Petit France reflect the glow of the holiday lights. Le Petit France has its own selection of smaller, more intimate Christmas markets along the canals which are less crowded and incredibly charming.
Attractions at Strasbourg's Markets
In addition to the markets and the magic of Strasbourg, there are a few main attractions. One is great for family travelers - the Winter Wonderland at Parc e l'Etoile. This is a Christmas village with illuminated cabins, a carousel, and fun rides for children. Here you have a great opportunity to take a break from walking around. Christmas concerts are another popular attraction, from classical concerts to choir renditions of Christmas carols. The Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra often holds seasonal performances in the majestic surroundings of the Strasbourg Opera House. Last, for our active travelers, is ice skating at Place du Marché aux Poissons, where visitors of all ages can glide across the ice while enjoying the festive atmosphere around them.
The combination of rich history, stunning architecture, and festive charm makes Strasbourg one of the most memorable Christmas destinations in Europe. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or looking to book your first Christmas Market trip, we're here to help!
