From Castles to Pastries - the Can't-Miss Tours of Copenhagen

Updated: Sep 16, 2023

Denmark is so full of rich cultural history it's difficult, at first, to know how to start designing your time there. Luckily for you - it's my job to help you figure it out, and I LOVE that task. When it comes to planning your time in a new destination I like to help create a mix of free time where you're on your own schedule, able to relax and explore at your own pace, and pair that with some guided tours - where you'll get time with local guides to fill you in on the history and details you would miss on your own.

Panorama Sightseeing & Canal Cruise

This tour starts off by bus and continues by boat - it's a great way to get a beginning overview at the start of your time in Copenhagen. You'll begin with half an hour at Amalienborg Palace where you can enjoy the beautiful changing of the guards at noon. After this you'll drive by some of the more famous sites in Copenhagen including stops at the Little Mermaid statue and the Royal Danish Opera House. At the conclusion of the bus tour you'll board a canal boat for a tour of the iconic Christianhaven and Frederiksholm canals - which is a great vantage point to explore more of the city.

Roskilde & The Viking Ship

Roskilde, known as the Viking Capital of Denmark, was developed as the hub of the Viking land and sea trade routes over a thousand years ago and is one of Denmark's oldest cities. Today it is a charming cobblestone streeted village only thirty minutes from Copenhagen. Your day will include time to walk around the city as well as a visit to the Viking Ship Museum located next to the harbor which, in addition to being an active boatyard, hosts 11th century vessels. You'll also stop by the Royal Roskilde Cathedral, the burial place of kings, queens, and knights that has now been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

North Sealand

On this tour you'll drive along the scenic route known as the "Danish Riviera," and admire the impressive mansions on the coast side as well as the picturesque fishermen's villages. You'll get to visit UNESCO World Heritage site Kronborg Castle, located on the northeastern tip of the island of Zealand. Kronborg is also known as Elsinore - home of Shakespeare's Hamlet. After that you'll visit the National Historic Museum in Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, built by King Christian IV in the 17th Century. The castle is situated on three islands surrounded by beautiful gardens as well as a lake. With a longstanding history dating back to the early decades of the 17th century, Danish kings and queens are still anointed in the chapel at Frederiksborg Castle to this day.

Malmo

When you're in Copenhagen you're right next to Malmö, the 3rd largest Swedish city located just on the other side of the Oresund Sea. On this tour you cross the impressive Oresundsbridge, which connects Denmark to Malmo. You'll spend time walking around Lilla Torg, a small square originally created in 1590 and still used as a marketplace - you'll love the feel of the charming cafés and small shops in the center of Malmo's old town. Walk in the park by Malmö Hus, a fortress built from 1537 to 1542, the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in Scandinavia. After that you'll go on a panoramic tour around the seafront area with the Turning Torso, Scandinavia's highest building.

Urban Copenhagen - Where the Locals Go

If you have enough days in your schedule this tour is a great one to make you feel like a Dane. A private local guide and a private driver will take you around the neighborhood of Refshaleoen – a local favorite to go to after work and during the long light summer nights. You'll stop at a small wine bar where you have the opportunity to enjoy a private sauna and a local beer or a glass of wine. After that you'll take a short walk into the Copenhagen Street Food Area, Reffen - also an outdoor multi-cultural area where you'll find concerts, lounge bars, and playgrounds. You'll have time to enjoy a street food dish & beverage of your choice, before traveling back to the city center with the local harbor bus, crossing you to Nyhavn Area where you'll end your tour.

The Forgotten Giants & Modern Art

Thomas Dambo is a recycle art activist who lives and works in Copenhagen. He created "The Six Forgotten Giants" using recycled wood one of the coolest art installations I've heard of. On this tour you get to spend the day in nature with a private guide, searching for the 6 large, wooden Giants lurking in the woods around Copenhagen's suburbs. During this tour you get to experience local areas and go on an active hike in a sustainable setting. As you travel around (also taking public transportation) your local guide will share stories of every day life in Denmark. At the end of your search you'll also visit the Arken Museum of Modern Art (also located in the suburbs of Copenhagen).

I mean - how cool is this?!?!

Danish Pastry Lesson

I love the idea of taking a cooking or baking class wherever I travel. Food plays such an important role in family gatherings and celebrations - no matter where you are - all over the world. So learning how to cook or bake in an authentic way always feels like being a real part of a culture. During this experience you learn how to bake Danish happiness (Dansk Hygge). A professional pastry chef will guide you through kneading, rolling, and folding the dough with butter. You'll get to experience a selection of traditional and Danish pastries (Wienerbro - which actually originated in Austria and translates to Viennese bread) and exchange cultural baking experiences. Please note that this class is not suitable for people with certain food allergies.
