The Witchery in Edinburgh

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Edinburgh is full of rich culture and history, but nothing parallels its deep-rooted culture of magic and witchery. In history, lore, and literature, Edinburgh is a center for all things witchcraft, making it a great destination for spooky stories, a mystical ambience, and a place to get lost in the enchantment of it all. If you want to fully immerse yourself into the experience, staying at The Witchery- steps away from Edinburgh Castle in one of the oldest, most central parts of the city - is our recommendation. Or stop for a pint at a local pub like The Last Drop or The White Hart Inn to hear the barkeeps tell the hauntings that still plague their centuries old bars. With all it has to offer, there is no right way to experience Edinburgh, but if you are looking for some sorcery, here are our top 5 picks (plus 2 bonus family-friendly picks):

The Real Mary King's Close

One of the most sought after tours in Edinburgh is The Real Mary King's Close tour. On this tour you'll go underground below the Royal Mile where the hidden streets and passages are full of 400 year old history. Along the way you'll meet and hear from guides acting as people of the past, telling the hidden histories of Edinburgh throughout time. Both interactive and informative, this is a great way to experience history of the city in an engaging way.

Underground Vaults of Edinburgh

Created under the city streets in the 1700s likely for storage and other uses, The Vaults quickly became a hideout for criminals and the lower class residents of the city. The Vaults of Edinburgh have had a wicked history since they were created, making it one of the most haunted places in the city. On your tour you'll discover a darker past of Edinburgh and the paranormal stories associated with the Vaults in modern times through the candle-lit passages and vaults.

Edinburgh Castle and The Witches' Well

While many visit Edinburgh Castle for its panoramic views of the city or the historically famous crown jewels, there is lore associated with the castle and some say it is still haunted by spirits of the past - most famously The Grey Lady, The Piper, and The Unluckiest Prisoner. With the history of the Great Witch Hunt of 1597 beginning with King James VI, the castle tours also reflect on this dark period of time that lasted for the next two hundred of years. Just outside the castle, you can make a stop at The Witches' Well - a dedication to the people persecuted during the time under the guise of "witchcraft" and "demonology."

"Potion" Making at The Cauldron

For a more fun take on witchery, add a stop at The Cauldron's restaurant and bar and take part in their magical immersive experience - where you take part in a potion making class. Themes and potions change with the season, and time spent at The Cauldron is upbeat and lively as your party makes their own "potions" or beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic options) with the guide of a potions master. Come as you are, or dress to the theme, and put your magic wands to the test as you prepare brews for your evening!

Leith Witch Market

In another more modern take on witchery, the Leith Witch Market is a great cultural immersion experience with local artisans and businesses coming together in Grassmarket on specific dates throughout the year (don't worry - VBJ will see if this event is available when you visit). With eclectic styles from all vendors, the Leith Witch Market is a great way to meet locals and give back to small businesses. Maybe you'll even stop for a palm reading along the way!

For the Kids - Magical Edinburgh Options

The Potter Trail

Calling Potterheads of all ages! If you are an avid Harry Potter fan, you may already know of the connection the books and film have to Scotland, and Edinburgh in particular. This walking tour takes you to local spots that inspired the world building of the magical world of Hogwarts and its characters. Beginning outside Greyfriars Kirkyard and ending at the famous loop of Victoria Street, local thespians put you into Harry Potter houses for this interactive tour as you test your Harry Potter knowledge and learn about the real history behind the making of the stories.

Department of Magic Escape Room and Tavern

The Department of Magic is a collection of Harry Potter themed escape rooms, one to uncover the prophecies to defeat the Dark Lord (we think this is best for Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs) and another to resurrect the Dark Lord (a Slytherin favorite). Dress to theme, as the escape rooms are deeply themed in the Harry Potter world. After your escape, head to the Tavern for "potion" making (non-alcoholic and alcoholic choices) and snacks. If you're looking for a more low-key experience, Afternoon Magick Tea is a great way to settled down midday for a spell.
