Vacations by Jillian has booked all sorts of trips- family adventures, relaxing honeymoons, multi-generational excursions - and one we are always enamored by is the solo traveler. There are so many wonderful destinations for solo travelers - there is truly something for everyone! Read for our top picks and some bonus content for your next solo trip.
Spain
Spain has so much to offer and has such variety among each region - from vineyards to bustling cities, quaint towns to rich history at every corner. Spain is one of the most visited countries in Europe (probably because everyone is searching for that afternoon Siesta- and who wouldn't). This means that Spain's tourism is built for all sorts of travelers - including you! Some people may be intimidated by a language barrier, but the signage in the cities are in multiple languages, plus we connect you to English speaking guides for your tours, excursions, and transfers. Whether its exploration of history and architecture at the Alhambra, a Flamenco show in Barcelona or the ultimate food tour in Madrid, ultimately, Spain makes the list for the variety of experiences across the regions.
Ireland
Ireland has been one of our favorite destinations for some time. With exquisite views and lively culture, it makes even the quick stop for lunch an experience to remember. We love the attitude Ireland natives have to the traveler, as they take pride in the Craic (the Gaelic word that now means "good times"). Whether you want to hike the Cliffs of Moher or sit on a dock in Dingle with the best fresh seafood the Atlantic has to offer, there is something for the solo traveler to soak up on the Emerald Isle. If you're feeling confident, Ireland is a great location for a self-drive- the Ring of Kerry or the Slea Head Route being popular routes for scenery.
Netherlands
If we had one word to describe the Netherlands it would be quaint. Even in the bustling capital of Amsterdam, the canals and stone buildings paint a picturesque scene with something to do hidden at every corner. The city is meant for pedestrians, the clean, paved paths making it easy for a first-time solo traveler to know the way and relaxing for the experienced solo traveler to wander the city, taking it all in. Once outside the city, you'll experience the rich history of the windmills in the countryside, famous rolling hills covered in bright tulips, cheese markets (yes, that means an entire market dedicated to local cheese- we're sold!), and vibrant fishing villages - where you can often take harbor boat tours and eat the great local food.
Denmark
Denmark is a relaxing and accessible solo travel destination. With easy walking or biking access through the city, Copenhagen is the perfect base for your Denmark vacation. Each section of the city has culture with its own individual feeling - so it's wonderful to wander from one area to the next or take a canal tour to see it all. If you're looking for that picturesque Copenhagen view of colorful buildings behind the canals, make your way to Nyhavn, the canal and entertainment district. If you're looking for iconic castles, beautiful towns, or Viking history - day trips outside of the capital to Frederiksborg Castle, Roskilde, and Helsingor all offer beautiful history just waiting for your wanderings.
Iceland
We really can't stop recommending Iceland travel, and as a solo destination, it holds up. While there is a lot be seen in Reykjavik, we think you need to get outside of the city to truly experience the landscape. If you're the kind of person who loves the outdoors - relaxing or adventure - Iceland is perfect with it's volcano tours, iceberg views, ice caves and lava tunnels, and deep history based on the landscape of the black sand beaches, gorgeous waterfalls, and mountains and gorges. This is a great destination for a self-drive, as it is imperative to see each side of the island. There nothing better than holding a cup of hot cocoa with the Northern Lights illuminating the landscape. Add that to your bucket list!

Japan
Tokyo is iconic and one of the most unique cities in the world. Sure it can be bright lights and high fashion, but it's also a center for incredible food and culture. Outside the capital, there are so many fabulous destinations within Japan full of wonderful views and rich culture and history. Kyoto is the cultural center of Japan- explore Zen gardens, The Golden Temple, or take a food tour. Or discover vibrant history among the modern Seoul, hopping from national parks to national museums, archaeological digs to the palace complex.
