'Tis the season for winter markets! Our clients love to travel during the holiday season for the enchanting winterscapes and the cozy ambience of villages that come alive with holiday markets. If you're traveling via river cruise or staying anywhere in Europe between late November through the end of December, it is likely a winter market is nearby. Whether you're a fan of mulled wine, handcrafted gifts, or simply immersing yourself in the holiday spirit, these winter markets are sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
Germany
It's no secret that Germany is the gold standard for Christmas Markets, so we simply could not chose one market. First and foremost is the iconic Nuremburg Christkindlesmarkt. In the spirit of Christmas, medieval-style Christmas plays are put on with a local child playing the role of the Christmas Angel. Within the traditions of Nuremburg is the incredible food that made this city world-famous. You'll have to try a bratwurst the Franconian way- "Drei im Weggla" or "Three in a bun"- and the delectable gingerbread.
Beyond Nuremburg is the Cologne Village of St. Nicholas , which is perfect if you're looking for family friendly seasonal magic. Set up to look like Santa's village, each stall is decorated to invite you to performers, crafts and activities, or delicious food and local goodies. Or maybe you're looking for a historical stroll - then you'll have to try Esslingen's Medieval Market, which commits to the medieval theme from backdrops to performers and all the way down to the actual products being sold. I mean - where else can you haggle for incense and leathers, then watch a jester perform?!
Vienna, Austria
There are over 20 markets in Austria, but the must-see is the Viennese Dream Christmas Market. Set to the backdrop of the city hall, this historic Christmas Market has existed since 1298. This is an incredibly family-friendly market, with a children's ice rink and classes to make cookies, candles, and crafts. Another winter market with a memorable backdrop is The Belvedere Palace Market. The row of stalls is set with a Baroque palace as its background - giving this market a romantic feel, and is perfect for a couple's trip to buy artisanal gifts and taste local foods.
London, England
We've been to the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland multiple times, and we can confirm there is literally something for everyone. Looking for a fun date night? Head to one of the themed bar experiences like Bar Ice where everything is made of ice, the Bavarian Village, or the Carousel Bar (don't worry - it spins nice and slow so you can enjoy the drinks). Rather find an activity? Hit the ice for a skate or try any of the rides and fun houses, or better yet, take an ice sculpting class! Taking the little ones? Ride the Santa Express or head to Santa Land. Hoping to try local food? There are so many street food options you won't even know where to begin! Of course, if you're there for shopping, there are over 100 stalls of local vendors. When I visited last, my favorites were the Bavarian Village for it's live music and the Alpine Lodge for a cozier ambience - and the views were perfect for people watching.
Strasbourg, France
Known as "The Capital of Christmas," Strasbourg has some of the most intricate decorations. A special lighting ceremony for the whole city - The Illuminations - is where each village displays their lights and decorations to mark the beginning of the festive season. If you look closely at each square or street, the decorations allude to the history and culture of the area (where there have been Christmas markets since 1570!). Make your own memory by taking a picture under the famous lit up Christkindelsmarik archway. This market is known for its pastries and local foods, but the beauty of the lights stands out as well. There are two must-see spots to view the full scape of the city under lights. If you're up for a climb, head to the top of the cathedral for a view overlooking the bustling city to feel like you are set in a Hallmark Christmas Movie. If the walk is too much, head to the covered bridge or Lock Passage by the river to look out at all the lights.
Copenhagen, Denmark
A place known for hygge- the sense of contentment through the art of coziness, comfortability, and slowing down- Copenhagen knows how to bring the perfect winter vibe to their markets. The Tivoli Gardens are transformed into a Nordic Christmas atmosphere, with thousands of lights - even at the lake. This truly feels like a storybook Christmas Village where you can go to the theater or concert hall for a performance, find local food vendors making goodies right in front of you, and walk through rows of curated market stalls lined with snow-covered pines. You must try all the delicious foods of the season that are offered - like æbleskiver, a pancake ball, or glogg, a spiced mulled wine or cocktail. Put all of this together, and your senses will be ignited in this market experience, truly bringing the hygge to life.
To Note
There are plenty of considerations to keep in mind when planning for your winter market experience. Keeping in mind what is opened and closed on Boxing day in the UK, and assuring that the opening dates of markets align with your trip - (did you know that you need to keep in mind when the first Sunday of Advent is?). We will spare you the details here - but we'll be sure to keep them in mind when we plan your trip!
Hoping for the perfect Christmas Market Experience? That's what we're here for!
